This evening, I helped host a reception in celebration of Commonwealth Day, as Assistant Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons, with diplomats and delegations from across the Commonwealth. Here is the text of my welcoming address:

Speaker Kinsella, Speaker Milliken, honourable parliamentarians, High Commissioners and members of the diplomatic corps, Ladies and Gentlemen, it is my pleasure to be among you in celebration of Commonwealth Day on Parliament Hill.

Dear Constituents,

Thank you for sharing your disapproval of the Conservatives’ use of “Harper Government” in what should be non-partisan Government of Canada communications.

I am equally disappointed that a prime minister would so unapologetically abuse his office for crass partisan gain. No wonder Canadians are so cynical about politics.

When St. John’s hosted the Juno Awards last year, it received federal support, but the same support would not be available to the Capital Region if it is chosen to host the Junos, says Victoria MP Denise Savoie.

In a letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper, she called for an end to a clause preventing Western Economic Diversification Canada from funding awards and shows.

The equivalent federal body representing Eastern Canada, called the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, does not have the same restrictions.

Transparency needed in negotiations on possible joint frigate program with UK

OTTAWA –The federal Conservative government must re-commit to building Canadian naval vessels in Canadian shipyards, said MP Denise Savoie (Victoria) after hearing news of recent discussions with Britain to jointly develop replacement and other vessels for both navies.

“Canadian shipbuilders on all coasts are understandably nervous,” said Savoie. “They need to know that the government is staying true to its commitment to build all replacement vessels for the Canadian Navy domestically.”

I write to convey the strong objection of many of my constituents to the recent, secretive agreement announced by you and President Obama that is nominally about security and trade, and to add their voice and mine to those Canadians who insist that this agreement be opened for public scrutiny and parliamentary debate.

“Mr. Speaker, I am proud to announce that my city - Victoria - has been named the most sustainable small city in Canada, the same week as we host municipal leaders from across the country at FCM's sustainable communities conference.

“From the world-leading Dockside Green development to our sea to sky greenbelt, Victoria is demonstrating political will and creativity to achieve a sustainable economy and to fight climate change at the same time.

“Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to present two petitions that Victorians have signed because of the diligent efforts of Chris Groot, an 18-year-old student at St. Michaels University in Victoria, to help more than 100,000 Canadians suffering from Parkinson's diseases and other neurological diseases.

“The petitioners note the growing gravity of these conditions and are asking the government to increase federal funding for the prevention of neurological diseases and for a cure for Parkinson's disease.
