SAVOIE NAMED ECOCOUNCILLOR OF THE YEAR
VICTORIA – Denise Savoie, Member of Parliament for Victoria, today expressed her appreciation for being named one of two winners of the 2005 EcoCouncillor award sponsored by the Gallon Environment Letter.
“The EcoCouncillor award is meant to encourage environmental excellence on the part of municipal councillors, and so I am delighted to be recognized in this way. Although no longer a city councillor, this award will inspire me to translate the local work I did on environmental issues to the federal level, in my new role as Member of Parliament.”
An independent panel of judges chose Savoie for the award based on her environmental leadership as a Victoria city councillor, and particularly for her role as chair of the Capital Regional District's Roundtable on the Environment.
Savoie’s environmental record also includes co-founding the Greater Victoria Cycling Coalition, serving as a member of the BC Parks Legacy Panel, spearheading the development of the Galloping Goose Trail and Selkirk Trestle Bridge, and working to ensure that the millions of dollars invested in the City of Victoria’s Dockside Lands were focused on social, environmental and economic sustainability
The Gallon Environment Letter is an environmental policy publication read widely both in Canada and abroad. The award was created in 2004, and is meant to “recognize an elected council member who has performed outstanding environmental and sustainable development service in a neighbourhood, municipality, or First Nation.”
