Ms. Denise Savoie (Victoria, NDP):
Mr. Speaker, I rise to give a 21 gun salute to 21 young scholars from across Canada. They are in Ottawa this week to participate in the Canwest Canspell National Spelling Bee. Among them, I am proud to say, is my constituent, Laura Weir, who won the Victoria Times Colonist regional spelling bee.
A quarter of a million middle school students participate annually in this competition. That is a quarter of a million young Canadians celebrating literacy together and setting an example.

At this point, both sides in the debate over a proposed new Inner Harbour marina have a right to be frustrated at the approval process. More than two years after the federal government launched an environmental assessment, there has been no formal public involvement.

Transport Canada, leading the assessment, has released no updates or interim reports. Officials have no prediction as to when the review will be complete. Public consultation is not needed, the federal government maintains, rebuffing efforts by Victoria MP Denise Savoie to open the process.

Once again I was proud to host my annual celebration of International Women’s Day in Victoria. Bringing together 200 women is a formula for lots of dynamic discussion and great ideas. I was also really pleased that ten local women artists agreed to display their work at the event.
This year’s keynote speaker was Coro Strandberg who has made a career helping to bring corporate social responsibility (CSR) to Canadian boardrooms and workplaces, playing a key role in Dockside Green, Vancity Credit Union, Victoria Values-Based Business Network and numerous other forward-thinking companies.

Remember when the economy was the most pressing issue facing the nation -- at least, according to Michael Ignatieff? So last week.

What has Liberals excited now is Rahim Jaffer's supposed sweetheart deal on drug charges and ongoing questions about the treatment of Afghan detainees -- allegations of complacency, collusion, cover-up, on the part of Conservative and Liberal governments. Oh, and prorogation. Still.

“Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to present several petitions. The first two have been signed by about 200 residents who are asking the government to impose a moratorium on non-essential use of cosmetic pesticides until they are proven safe in the long term.

“The petitioners wish to prevent the kind of negative, endocrine-disrupting impacts that research is now showing atrazine to have. They ask the government to respect the precautionary principle to protect children's health and to pass Bill C-368.

Victoria MP Denise Savoie is celebrating women’s contribution to society at her International Women’s Day event.

“Over the years, through this event, I’ve tried to bring women together to share their experiences with up-and-coming young women to inspire and support each other,” she said in an e-mail.

“For me, International Women’s Day is to reflect on how women, past and present, have been successful in shaping our country.”

This year, Coro Strandberg, principal of Strandberg Consulting and part of the Victoria Values-Based Business Network, is the keynote speaker.
